The Iowa Environmental Council is urging utilities to aggressively use federal clean energy incentives to achieve carbon-free electricity by 2035. In 2023, 64% of Iowa’s energy generation came from wind and solar, while fossil fuel use declined 6% since 2021. While MidAmerican Energy claims 100% renewable delivery through renewable energy certificates, the Council criticized this as misleading since fossil-fuel plants remain active. With rising electricity demands, the Council stressed that customer-driven generation and smarter investments will be key to Iowa’s clean energy transition.
